three people and injuring many others. we're joined with the latest. >> the suspect was last listed in serious condition. his arrest bringing some much-needed comfort to this community this morning. usa, usa! >> thank you! >> celebration and release. the second suspect in the boston marathon bombings off the streets and in custody. [cheers and applause] >> nineteen-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev was found hiding in a boat in a yard in watertown, 1/2 last night. arrested after boston suburbs were put on a day-long lock down. day-long lock down. more than 1 million residents told to stay inside as s.w.a.t. teams went door to door searching for the suspect. >> it's unbelievable. i was cooped up in my house for the last almost 24 hours just

wondering if the guy was in my back yard, if he was in my garage, you know, or if he was in my neighborhood. >> and he was. cowering, bleeding after a shootout where police that left his 267-year-old brother tamerlan dead. police said they tracked them down after they execute an m.i.t. officer and then led police on a wild chase. tsarnaev, the ethnic cheffian and u.s. citizen who lived here for more than a decade got away, but not for long. his arrest praised by the president. >> we've closed an important chapter in this tragedy. >> and by this community still in mourning. >> it brings a sigh of relief, and i think it really allows us to start the healing process. >> and the suspect still has not been officially charged. still no word on the motive. live in boston, marcy gonzales,

abc news. now back to you. >> thank you, marcy. an odd twist in thursday's shooting death of an m.i.t. officer, the event that set off the manhunt. the 16-year-old sean collier as an officer with a baby. recently began volunteering at the boxes gym with suspect number one, tamerlan tsarnaev, trained several years ago. the owner of the gym said it's unlikely the two ever crossed paths. one of those injured in the attack is an 11-year-old martinez boy and there is promising news about him this morning. yesterday aaron hern ate his first solid meal since being injured. he was struck in his leg and arm by shrapnel near the finish line as he waited for his mother to cost. we have a story about several community fundraisers this

weekend for aaron and his family. you can find it on our website at "see it on tv." >> there was relief the second suspect was captured alive. they also described a quiet and eerie city they left behind. we have their stories from sfo. >> passengers arriving at sfo had just come from a boston they had never seen before. >> eerie. >> with the manhunt underway, boston was basically shut down. no taxi's, transit or amtrak for hours. >> yeah, it was very quiet. very eerily quiet. a lot of people stayed home from work. >> carroll came off the plane wearing her marathon metal. the boston native and current san francisco resident had to stop six miles from the finish line because of the explosion. during the flight the pilot announced that the second suspect had been captured. >> a few people clapping. i think for me it was just relief for my family who lives back there and who was kind of dealing with themmediate trauma and fear.

>> passengers say it was an ordeal getting to logan international airport. >> there was a long line of cars and they were searching every car looking in the trunk, look underneath the cars, checking the i.d.'s of everyone coming inside the airport. >> for david and they had to drive from their home in vermont to catch the flight in san francisco. >> there were highway road signs flashing to say avoid boston, did not proceed to boston. one side note about carroll, she was running to raise money for cancer research a few days after the marathon she put her outfit back on. marathon bib back on and finished the last six miles. she said drivers were honking their horns and people were stopping to thank her and even give her some donations. at sfo, abc7 news. >> we will have continuing coverage on the story throughout the weekend and we hope to have live reports later today from boston with abc news reporter. that's tonight on abc7 news at 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

>> at 6:09 you are getting a live look outside courtesy of our damage cam. you see the beautiful skyline of san francisco. a clear morning. some fog off the coast. temperatures will be warm today and reaching 90 degrees by the end of this week in some areas. meteorologist lisa argen will have your accuweather forecast coming up. >> well, even after last night's suspect's arrest in boston, security at major sporting events remains tight. and that was the same case here in bait area at at&t park with the giants playing their first home game since the boston bombings. abc7 news reporter sergio was outside the park, he said many were wait to go get in. >> clean out your box.

have your bags open. >> the search of nearly everyone coming into at&t park was just partf the overall test to get past security. even trash cans were wheeled away as a precaution. >> i think what they are doing is appropriate, and i think certain times call for certain measures. >> but the extra time spent on searching everyone caused a snarl of giants fans patiently waiting in lines outside. >> almost an hour now and we haven't even passed there. >> still they understood why it was happening and at least one fan experienced the tightened security in boston firsthand. >> they shut down all cabs, service, told everyone to stay home, they said you have a shop, don't open up your shop and basically don't go out the front door. that was the word they put out. >> in the eighth inning giants fans tipped their hats to the boston red sox by swinging along to sweet caroline. ♪ sweet caroline

>> the red sox had their home game called off because of the city-wide lock down. for san francisco police the attack in boston is something they are already studying. >> we will take it apart. law enforcement across the country will. we will train to it and we will be better for it. >> something that helped keep people calm in line was the fact that news of that second suspect being arrested in boston was breaking as people were in line. there were people who were learning about it on their smartphones and passing the word along to some of their fellow fans. at at&t park, abc7 news. >> people at boston commons cheered the news of the capture of the second suspect in the bombing last night and a nearby watertown crowd spontaneously burst into applause and cheers as police cars passed by. meanwhile boston police are thinking of the victims,

tweeting in our kind of world, let us not forget the families of martin richard, lindsey lou, krystle campbell and officer collier. more than 180 people were injured and 58 remain hospitalized. the fbi spent a second day yesterday here in the bay area at fremont's tenergy headquarters. company makes a battery the suspects used in the boston bombing. yesterday the company gave the fbi a list of people who bought batteries from them over the past few years. there are so many questions still unanswered, but they do know whoever bought the battery used in the bomb purchased it just within the last few months. >> two fbi agents were at the company collecting information on customers who purchased a battery like this over the past few years.

their 7.2-volt, 3,000 milli-amp hour nickel battery pack was used in the bombings. it consists of six 1.2-volt batteries. its a little more powerful than putting together six double-a batteries to power something. it was meant to be used it in ings like remote control cars and trucks. tenergy gave the investigators a list of people who purchased the batteries directly from their website and a list of the 100 hobby shops that sell them. >> if it was from a retail store, obviously we would not have that information. but if they bought is directly from us, we have that information. and we also provided all the information on all the retail stores that we have told to. -- sold to. >> while they don't know who bought the battery, the list of customers will help the fbi piece together the boston terror plot. >> who perhaps made the order, it might not have been either one of these guys, it might have been somebody else. so you have a conspiracy, you have a collusion with other people, you have a bigger network. all of that is very important to the composite for the case. >> and while those questions remain unanswered, they do know somebody bought the battery

recently. tenergy knows that. >> the battery pack was received in december of the last year so it's been over the last couple months it was purchased so that narrows down the list quite a bit. >> neither of the suspects' names were on the listenergy gave to the fbi, but he tls me the fbi is already done with their investigation at the company. the company will continue to cooperate with authorities as they continue this search for answers. we have developing news in southwest china where a powerful earthquake has killed more than 100 people and injured many more. it was a 6.6 magnitude near a city of more than 1 million people in sichuan province. at least 124 are dead, thousands are injured so far. new video this morning shows the shaking as it happened. it goes on for more than 25 seconds. a hospital was evacuated with a triage set up at a courtyard outside.

casualties are expected to rise as many of the areas of unreachable by road this morning. military helicopters are on search and rescue missions. the grim job of recovering those who lost their lives in the massive explosion in west texas continues. as of in morning there are 14 confirmed fatalities, with at least 13 still missing. more than 200 were injured. president obama has pledged federal aid to the town where laura anthony continues to cover the story. yesterday laura spoke with residents who haven't lost their spirit, even after losing their homes. >> it's gone. everything -- the inside is gone. the ceilings are gone and the insulation is laying on the floor. >> do you feel lucky, though, that you got out. >> lucky for my wife. she was sitting in the living room on the couch and the ceiling fell on top of her. >> and some good news. laura reports all 144 patients living in the nursing home that

was blown apart survived the blast. bay area democrats are determined to pass new gun control laws despite a failed attempt in the senate this week. at 1:00 today in palo alto congresswoman anna ishu joins mike thompson to host a gun prevention meeting. both vow not to let the outcome in the senate stop them from passing house legislation. they say 90% of americans support the effort. the north vallejo little league season has been shot indefinitely after shots were fired at a game this week. a meeting will be held to discuss safety issues. allen wong has more from vallejo. >> the field where major league all-star pitcher c.c. sabathia played as a kid is empty. sounds of baseball silenced after a parent fired shots into the vehicle of a parent from the opposing team on wednesday.

>> fired a weapon at a t-ball game. how do you bring a gun to a t-ball game, and second, how do you fire it off? >> now anthony said his son's season has been cancelled indefinitely until the little league can figure out how to ensure the safety of their players. >> i don't know how many games were left, but i was really look forward to playing more. >> i don't want to cancel the whole season, but i would rather lose the season than lose a kid. >> the vice president calvin hill said gunshots were fired several times near the field before the incident and even since. neighboring east vallejo little league said the parental behavior issues are common there, too. they blame it on a lack of parental involvement. >> the feeling is that if more parents were involved, there would be fewer problems. >> police are still looking for the parent who fire the shots and now the fate of the north vallejo little league season rests on an emergency meeting this weekend and the number of parents that show up.

morning where it is clear. numbers cool in the 50s. we have some 40s closer to our beaches. 12 downtown. 51 in oakland with 15 in mountain view. 53 in san jose. lower 40s half moon bay and 46 in santa cruz. the roof camera, you can see the nice colors here. that sun will be up in just about ten minutes. we are looking at a beautiful start to the day. a high of 67 today downtown. that's above average. 58 by the delta right now. and 58 union city. los gatos it's usually cooler, one of the cooler locations. a little bit of patchy fog at the coast. otherwise we will be nice and sunny today. look for the warmer weather tomorrow. an average of 2 to 4 degrees of warming and then as high pressure gets even closer monday and tuesday, it strengthens and the flow is offshore and we will be cooking inland with numbers in the 90s monday and tuesday. comfortable, though. 70s still at our beaches. this morning notice how mild it is with anywhere from warming

one degree at the airport to 13 degrees warmer out by the delta. 3 degrees warmer for mountain view and 2 degrees warm ersan hose. so it's set up, high pressure offshore. when it's offshore we still have that on shore flow. it will be a weak one so the sea breeze will keep temperatures in the 60s. in the days ahead it will get a little closer. work to keep the storm track well to the north so we aren't talking of any weather systems headed our way until the end of the week when the high pressure ridge begins to weaken. but between now and then it's just going to build and strengthen, especially monday, into tuesday. some temperatures to look forward to throughout the work week, livermore tomorrow into the mid-80s. today not quite there. look for the numbers to peek. middle of the week and dropping right on through the next couple of days, right up to the end of the week. here's a look at the highs. 61 monterey. look for 90s in palm springs. temperatures from the south bay, it will be nice and comfortable, 79 san jose. 71 richmond with numbers in the

>> welcome back at 6:29 on this saturday morning. thank you for joining us. we are starting this half-hour with a quick look at the weather. here's meet lisa argen. >> the sun is up. we are anticipating a nice sunny, mild to warm afternoon. temperatures are cool, mainly in the 50s. some 40s at our coast. we are are looking at 50s at the half moon bay. tonight should be nice and comfortable with numbers dropping to the 70s inland. fur headed to at&t park for the game this evening we are looking at temperatures in the low 60s. bring your jacket. it will certainly be cooler, dropping into the 50s. the sun setting at 7:50. so going for another win for sure.

kira. >> thank you, lisa. the second suspect in the boston marathon bombing is in custody this morning. he's in serious condition at a hospital being t for gunshot wounds after his arrest last night. the first suspect, his brother, was killed by police earlier in the manhunt. now the healing begins. in boston people turned out to pay respects for the bombing victims. a memorial is growing at the finish line where two bombs exploded monday. we have been covering the manhunt in nearby watertown where fear and anger quickly turned to celebration. >> celebration in the streets of watertown after residents learned a second suspect in the boston marathon bombing had been caught. >> this is what we've been waiting for since monday. and we finally got both of them, and we can rest tonight, you know. >> brendan and mckayla spent the day sheltered in their apartment while an army of law enforcement hunted for the 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev.

>> we've been up since 3:30. it's been scary, we've been on edge but we are so thankful for all the police and first responders. we felt safe all day. >> even as gunfire erupted nearby. >> we thought it was people celebrating because they thought the lock down was over, but then we found out it was actually gunfire. then we heard it again later on probably around 7:30, 8:00. >> then news of the capture. >> the suspect has been taken into custody alive. [cheers and applause] >> i'm really happy that he was alive because i just want to know more and i think everyone wants to know why. what were his intentions? i'm really excited. >> of course, we will know more in the days to come, but a lot of relief here in watertown. abc7 news. in case you missed it, the 19-year-old suspect dzhokhar tsarnaev was captured hiding in a boat behind the home in watertown. we have a picture of that house.

you can see the boat in the back to the left. the owner noticed blood on the watercraft, and also that the tarp covering it was ripped. he lifted it, got a glimpse of him and immediately called police. authorities quickly swarmed the area and set up a helicopter with a heat sensing camera. the camera confirmed someone was inside the boat. police then sent a robot to pull off the tarp. they tried to talk him out of the boat. he was unresponsive. we now know that's because of injuries he suffered during the gun battle that killed his brother late thursday night. authorities launched flash bang grenades before approaching him and then took hem into custody. new this morning, president obama's weekly message is all about the drama that captured the nation all this week. he praised the undaunted spirit of the bostonians. all of those from those who rushed in to help the survivors

to the state and local and federal police. he said americans have proven they refused to be terrorized. >> through the days that would test even the sturdiest of souls, boston spirit remains undaunted. america's spirit remains undimmed. our faith in each other, our love for this country, our common creed that cuts across whatever superficial differences we may have, that's what makes us strong. the republicans agree senator tim scott of south carolina calls the first responders amazing americans who put their own lives on the line. both addresses were recorded before the second suspect was finally captured last night. the boy scouts of america has announced a big change proposing to lift the ban on letting gay youngsters belong to the organization. the possible change in policy comes after the boy scouts conducted a survey earlier this year. but the scouts will continue to

bar gay adults from serving in leadership roles. a local scout wants that rule abolished so he can become a scoutmaster. casey leonard is openly gay. >> it's tricky, and it's confusing because it sends scouts the message that it's okay to be gay until you are 18. >> gay rights groups have pushed for a total reversal of the ban. some religious groups want it to stay in place. many scout troops are sponsored by churches. members of course the scouting national council will vote on the proposal next week. >> there's been a drop in the number of unemployed californians. the state's jobless rate dropped to 9.4% in march. that's down .2% from february. they credit it to an increase of more than 25,000 new jobs. one year ago california's unemployment rate stood at 11%. a tentative deal is on the way for the palo alto school district and its teacher's

union. our media partner, the san jose mercury news, reports 760 teachers would get a 3% pay raise and a one-time bonus under the collective bargaining agreement. a similar deal was reached with 520 employees at the california school employees association. the board of education will hold a public hearing on both agreements this tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on churchill avenue. a final vote will be may 7th. well, no two ways about it, garbage is dirty. but at the biggest landfill in northern california, that garbage is helping to produce something extraordinary clean. we are talking about the ultima landfill near livermore. jonathan bloom put on his work boots to show us how all that trash is producing treasure. >> reporter: 25 tons of garbage. each truckload is just a small, smelly chunk of the 5,000 tons dumped here every day and the 50 million tons of trash hidden

beneath the dirt at northern california's biggest landfill. seagulls, this is the mother load. you can keep them away. but for humans it's just a worthless pile of junk, right? >> with while this may not be any man's treasure, it turns out there's treasure deep underneath it. smell that? that's the smell of fuel that will power the next generation of trash trucks. this giant transfer truck is literally running on garbage. all the trash gives off a lot of methane, and methane is the main ingredient in natural gas. >> it's raw and sucks it out of the landfill. >> operations director ken lewis showed us the system that pulls all that gas out of the landfill.

gas they normally have to incinerate. now they pump it out and put it in the trucks as fuel. >> there's a dramatic reduction. >> sean turner said landfill gas is cleaner than natural gas we burn in our homes and for waste management it's cheaper. but it's only possible because of this. a truck engine they say is the most powerful ever to run on natural gas. >> it's been in design for quite some time. >> you guys are using it before you could buy it? >> yeah. we have three engines in the fleet right now running as prototypes. >> but they plan to convert their entire fleet on trucks to run on the trash gas. they are not only cleaner, but quieter. soon the loudest noise here might be those seagulls. in livermore, jonathan bloom, abc7 news. >> straight ahead from boston to big sur, you will hear about runners who escaped the boston bombings and their concerns about an upcoming marathon here. and the 6:37 here's a live look from our hd roof cam. isn't that spectacular? such a clear morning. there will be really lovely temperatures today. meteorologist lisa argen has our

coast, but it should be a clear day with plenty of sunshine and temperatures really heating up. unseasonably warm this week in the bay area. meteorologist lisa argen has that forecast coming up. but first we continue to follow developing news in the boston marathon bombings. right now the surviving suspect from monday's terror attack is hospitalized in serious condition following his capture last night. he was found hiding in a backyard boat suffering gunshot wounds from thursday night's shootout with police that killed his brother. federal agents have yet to question him but they say they will not read him his miranda rights first because the government is invoking a public safety exception. limited and focused interrogation of the suspect is allowed as evidence when there's a reasonable need to protect the public from immediate danger. and from boston to big sur

there's a link that ties monday's boston marathon to the big sur marathon which take place a week from tomorrow. along highway 1 between big sur and carmel, organizers were in potassium iodine when the explosions happened. as abc7 news reporter david louie explains, they are now preparing to beef up security. >> 400 runners in the boston marathon are part of an elite group that will do back-to-back 26-mile races. a week from sunday they will be running the big sur international marathon. the race director was near the finish line when the devices exploded. >> but knowing where it was and how many people were there and how crowded the area was, was, you know, kind of an immediate gut check reaction that this is not good. >> the tragedy could have caused boston runners to cancel their big sur plans, but that hasn't happened. >> there's more determination than ever because there were many people who were part of this special group of people, 400 entrants who are part of the boston to big sur challenge, more determination ever to come here to big sur and finish their race. >> security along the scenic ocean route will be raised.

meetings are underway involving local, state and federal agencies. 76-year-old monterey runner, judy holloway, was back in the pack when the explosions happened in boston. but that's not going to deter her plans to run next weekend. >> i can see where you would be much more concerned about the security. as a participant, i'm not worried. >> the same holds true for pacific grove high school presence practical matt bell. he has been reviewing his arrival at the finish line. >> i can't imagine not running. in a funny sort of way i want to run in spite of what happened. you have to return to normal. >> a successful running of the big sur international marathon will not have not only an psychological impact but an economic one. participants of last year's marathon pumped an estimated $18 million into the local economy. along the race route just south of carmel, david louie, abc7 news. >> this weekend, if it happened

>> welcome back, it's 6:47. lisa argen has a beautiful forecast. this is one time we can get out of work and enjoy the beautiful weather. >> and it's nice in the evenings, too. the warmth will stay with us the next several days. live doppler 7hd today starts the warming trend. talking nothing but clear conditions. that sets the stage for a warmup in the next couple of hours. in fact, right now it's pretty comfortable, as well works temperatures mainly in the 50s. others a little cool at our

coast. but we will be looking at a light sea breeze there. here's a look from the east bay. notice we have a nice, clear spot. 59 oakland and 53 in san jose. we will see temperatures climbing quickly through the 80s by the early part of the week in parts of the south bay. but today a nice steady rise in our temperatures. 52 downtown. we are looking at 45 in santa cruz. here's a look at the roof camera. nice and clear. a nice start with 58 by the delta. here's one of our warmer locations with cooler numbers from santa rosa at 45 and nap few right now. kind of chilly there. but the forecast highlights feature just a little bit of patchy fog along the coast. but otherwise we are looking at warmer conditions tomorrow, on the order of two to four degrees. and then summer-like warmth with temperatures hitting the 90-degree mark by tuesday and wednesday in the inland east bay. but all over the bay we are much, much warmer in the north bay and even along the coast.

warmer from san carlos to half moon bay. the reason why, we have high pressure that's exerting higher pressure down on the atmosphere, not allowing for any clouds. once it begins to slide a little closer to the coast, that's when we will get our offshore flow. but between now and the entire work week, we're looking at dry conditions. temperatures peeking monday and tuesday, with 70s at our coast to near 90 inland. so if you don't like the heat, it will be nice and comfortable along the shore. low 80s in the southland today with 75 in yosemite. still a little snow on the ground in the northern sierra. 82 in chico. some temperatures closer to home in the south bay. look at 81 in los gatos with 77 sunnyvale. how about 76 in mill poo peseta's. comfortable with low 70s up the peninsula. pacifica today the light sea breeze at the coast keeping temperatures a little cool here but still reall downtown.
